While I am now a Lead Practitioner of Mathematics, my own teaching journey started out with the need to complete a year long ‘Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course’ at the University of Sunderland. Having originally studied for a degree in law, I didn’t meet the entrance qualifications of the time to go straight into a PGCE in Mathematics – despite my A-Level in the subject!
I have never forgotton how challenging my ‘maths’ year was, however I know that completing (surviving?) this year has set me up to succeed as a now higher level GCSE and A-Level teacher.
Unfortunately due to changing climates, accessing high quality CPD focused on subject knowledge is now incredibly challenging whether you are just starting out or have been teaching for twenty years.
I hope The Mathematical CPD Library will fill this gap and help you upskill your knowledge and be better equipped to help your students succeed in the classroom.
I will always advocate that having a degree in a subject other than maths can be a huge strength in the classroom and that some of the best maths teachers come from a non-specialist background. After all, having to work on your own maths skills means your more likely to relate to the challenges your subjects are facing! I hope that with the help of the library, you’ll believe this too.
